Whitewater Rafting On The Headwaters Of The Amazon 12 days / 11 nights (ACMITWWR12)
Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley - Apurimac Whitewater Rafting - Machupicchu - Lima

The Apurimac Canyon is one of the world's hidden gems of white-water. It is justifiably gaining a reputation as one of the world's top ten rafting rivers, combining a mix of exhilarating rapids and awesome scenery. From the ancient Inca capital of Cusco it is a spectacular bus journey to the start of this river deep in the heart of an impressive 3000m deep canyon. From here all supplies are taken for four days of wilderness rafting. No previous rafting experience is necessary as full safety instruction and safety talk is given so even the most novice crews are expertly trained up to meet the challenges and thrills of this non-stop adrenaline-pumping roller coaster ride of a life time.

Apart from world-class rapids, the Apurimac boasts pristine sandy beaches for camping, spectacular sun-bleached rock formations and rare wildlife including otters, puma and the ultra elusive Andean bear. It is an adventure lover’s dream come true.

This 12-day program also includes the visit to the most important cultural and historical highlights in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machupicchu.

Day 3 Lima - Cusco

Morning flight to Cusco. In the afternoon, we visit the legendary Koricancha, the most important temple devoted to worshiping the Sun deity and whose walls were once plated with sheets of gold. We continue to the Plaza de Armas or main square to visit the Cathedral, and end our tour in San Blas, the bohemian quarter of the city, home to the workshops and stores of the most renowned artisans in Cuzco, including Mendivil and Merida.
B

Day 4 Cusco River Rafting - Urubamba River

A fun day out for any one looking for an alternative adventure to a beautiful section of the Urubamba river. Rafting is a fun sport, suitable for pretty much any one - no experience is needed to take part in the great day out. The section we run is usually the class III-IV Chuquicahauna section, above Cusco, where the river is cleaner and more fun. It takes one and a half hours to drive to the river. On arrival we will inflate the rafts and following a full safety briefing and instruction in the art of White-water rafting, we set off for approx two hours of fun white-water rafting. The river starts gently with time to practice the manoeuvres required, then builds up with more fun rapids through a beautiful canyon where we will hopefully see torrents ducks and views of the surrounding peaks. After approximately two hours of rafting, we reach our take out point and enjoy a full picnic lunch before returning to Cusco mid to late afternoon.
B, L

Day 5 Cusco - Sacred Valley - Cusco

Early in the morning, we are driven to the Sacred Valley, visiting the archaeological site of Sacsayhuamán on the way. We also stop to learn the ancient weaving techniques used to create Andean clothing at Awanacancha, a breeding center for South American camelids. We visit Pisaq archaeological site and its colorful market, before we enjoy lunch at Casa Hacienda Orihuela, a private residence with an impressive collection of Inca and colonial art and artifacts, where the Lambarri-Orihuela family will be our hosts. In the afternoon, we visit Ollantaytambo, a still-thriving Inca village set below an ancient Inca fortress and temple with stunning views over the valley that makes us feel as if we have stepped back into the 15th century. Return to Cusco in the evening.
B, L

Day 6 Apurimac Whitewater Rafting (Day 1)

We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco for the spectacular drive to the Apurimac canyon, hopefully glimpsing on route the snow-capped Vilcanota mountain range before descending into the canyon to our starting point on the banks of the Apurimac. Here we inflate our specialised rafts, load up with provisions and, following a full safety talk and instruction in the art of white water rafting, we head off into the canyon in search of adventure.
L, D

Day 7/8 Apurimac Whitewater Rafting (Days 2 and 3)

For the next three days we challenge the rapids of the mighty Apurimac. "Apu - rimac ", in Quechua, signifies " The Great Speaker " - Inca nobility and priests would often 'consult' the river on route to the city of Cusco. The rapids are pretty much non-stop and at times the huge boulders that block our way force us to the bank for further scouting. At several points we have to portage un-runnable falls. At night we camp on beautiful sandy beaches and explore the amazing rock formations. Andean foxes, otters and pumas have all been sighted on the banks of the river. In between the harder rapids there is plenty of time to take in the awesome scenery and marvel at the near sheer sided gorge down which we are travelling.
B, L, D (2 days)

Day 9 Apurimac Whitewater Rafting (Day 4)

Finally we reach a break in the canyon walls and from here it is a short bus journey back to Cusco, passing on route the towering snow capped Salcantay Mountain. On arrival in Cusco we drop you off at your hotel for a well earned hotel bed, hot shower and perhaps you will join us later to explore the delights of Cusco’s nightlife and celebrate your successful descent of through the mighty Apurimac canyon.
B, L

Day 10 Cusco - Machu Picchu

Early this morning we board the Vistadome train to Machu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas”. We visit the Sacred Inca citadel enjoying its main temples and hidden corners. Lunch at the Machupicchu Sanctuary Lodge, next to Machu Picchu ruins, the only hotel which enjoys this unique location. In the afternoon we can choose to visit the fabulous Inca Bridge or climb Huayna Picchu and enjoy the stunning views from this privileged spot until sunset. Accommodation at our chosen hotel in Machupicchu or Aguas Calientes.
B, L

Day 11 Machu Picchu - Cusco

Free morning to relax in Aguas Calientes or return to Machupicchu for an optional second visit. In the afternoon, we depart by Vistadome train from Aguas Calientes arriving in Cusco in the evening.
B

Day 12 Cusco - Lima

Enjoy a free morning in Cusco before you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Lima. Continuation of your journey home or connection with another extension.

Other Useful Information

Climate

Cusco’s climate is divided into two differentiated seasons: the rainy season, from November to April (the heaviest rainfalls occurring usually between January - March); and the dry season, from May to October. The dry season is colder, so temperatures can drop to below 0 degrees at night.

In the Cusco area, temperatures range from 15-20ºC during the day if it’s sunny, to 05-10ºC if cloudy or rainy. At Machupicchu and Aguas Calientes, at lower altitude, temperatures are usually warmer though warm clothes are still recommended at night.

RIVER RAFTING - Important Notice

  • The Apurimac river expedition travels through a remote and rarely visited part of Peru and we believe our clients should be aware that the remoteness that makes the Apurimac so very special could also cause certain problems. Thus, whilst we endeavour to minimise the chances of anything unexpected happening, it has to be noted that no itinerary can or should be rigidly adhered to. This is the very nature of adventure travel and we expect our clients to be prepared for delays and slight alterations in our programmed events.
  • Specific to the Apurimac is the possibilities of delays due to the difficulty in reaching the river. Should we deem the rafting portion of the Rio Apurimac to be too high to be safely navigated we reserve the right to offer an alternative river. In all cases we will advise you of any changes in the itinerary as early as possible. We have taken all these possibilities into account when planning this expedition and have allowed sufficient leeway to enable us to successfully run this exceptional trip.
  • The majority of dietary and medical requirements can be catered for, but we must be notified of these at the time of booking. Obtaining the correct vaccinations and visas required for Peru is the responsibility of the clients’.
  • You should also be aware that adventure travel, in particular white-water rafting in remote areas such as Southern Peru, does carry with it certain inherent risks that you, the client, will have to assume. You will have to take out adequate travel insurance to cover these risks and any costs incurred due to sickness, delayed flights and other factors out of Enigma’s control.
  • A pre-departure meeting will be held on the day before departure. It is highly recommended you attend. All clients will be asked to sign a release and waiver form and must provide a photocopy of their passport, Peru entry stamp and details of their travel insurance.
  • Safety Policy
Whilst rafting, safety kayaks and cata-rafts are present wherever deemed necessary and we carry an extensive emergency first aid kit and satellite telephones on all remote expeditions. The key to our successful Safety Policy is our highly trained and superbly motivated staff. The guides make decisions that put safety above all else. These decisions include walking around rapids, waiting out for better weather, route changes and limiting trip participation if the client is too sick to continue. We expect the clients to abide by these decisions.
  • River Guides
All our river guides hold the internationally recognized “Swift-water Technician” qualification. Staff training on safe river-running techniques is constantly being reviewed. All guides are deemed experienced and capable to raft at the high levels necessary on these demanding rivers. All have up to date Wilderness first aid certificates, have agreed to abide with our commitment to maximum risk reduction and are aware of emergency & evacuation procedures at any point.
  • Safety Responsibility of Passengers
Clients are expected to abide by certain basic safety rules including:
    • Informing the guide of any medical condition or any other factors that may affect your or anyone else’s safety.
    • Respecting the guide’s decisions.
    • Being responsible and taking care of individual equipment that is assigned to them.
    • Keeping covered to avoid sun exposure and insect bites.
    • Drinking plenty of water to avoid sunstroke and dehydration.
    • Understanding that you are entering National parks and there are certain rules concerning litter, waste & wildlife that you must abide by.
    • Being honest with yourself concerning how comfortable you are and if your limits are being pushed.
    • Advising your guide if any medical emergency arises that if left untreated could jeopardize the safety of the entire group.
