CHICLAYO, TRUJILLO, CAJAMARCA - HOTELS AND OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS

CHICLAYO

Chiclayo is the capital of the department of Lambayeque, which gave rise to the pre-Hispanic cultures of Mochica, Sican or Lambayeque and Chimu.

The city is a skilful and economical center from the north of the country. Located in a productive valley, agriculture activities are very important, outstanding rice production, sugar cane and cotton.

In its valleys flourished many important pre-Inca cultures, such as "Lambayeque or Sican", "Mochica" and "Chimu". Part of its culture and treasures can be seen in Lambayeque at the Brüning Museum and the new Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum and Sican National Museum.

During the Colony, it was only a simple Indian village in the road that connected Lambayeque and Zaña, and therefore the city lacks colonial buildings. Nevertheless, today it is a city in full development process, having important discoveries as a main entrance, such as "El Señor de Sipán" (Lord of Sipan) at Huaca Rajada (important master discovered in 1987 with his in-life treasures), "Señor de Sicán" at Batangrande and Tucume. Thanks to these important discoveries, Chiclayo turns out to be the second important destiny, after Cusco, for the archaeological and monumental tourism in Peru.

TRUJILLO

Trujillo, with over 600.000 inhabitants, is the current capital of the department of La Libertad. The city was founded by the Spaniard conqueror Diego de Almagro on December 6th, 1534 (before the foundation of Lima) and is located near Chan Chan, capital of the pre-Inca Chimú Nation, in a valley of great cultural hegemony.

Among 1685 and 1687, given the opulence of Trujillo, and due to the incursions of the pirates, the city was walled for its protection, and this enclosure constitutes today the historical center where the old large houses of exquisite gates, the convents and churches are located.

Very near the city you will find numerous and wonderful archaeological monuments of the Mochica and Chimú cultures, outstanding Chan Chan's citadel, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Trujillo is also famed by the traditional celebrations of the Marinera's National Contest (Peruvian dance's contest), the International Festival of Spring, Competition of "Caballos de Paso" (Peruvian "Paso" horses), Exhibition of "Caballitos de Totora" (small rafts made out of straw of the region), Biannual of Contemporary Art and International Festival of Ballet, for what is also called the "Cultural Capital of Peru."

Huanchaco, picturesque spa and fishermen's creek will offer you the opportunity to see the "caballitos de totora", the same used by the Mochicas in the III century.
