Puno is a city in southeastern Peru, located at 3,860 m (12,421 ft) above sea level. It was founded with the name of "Villa Rica de San Carlos de Puno" in 1668, by the Viceroy Count of Lemos, to end with the problems of possession of the silver mines of Laicacota of the brothers Gaspar and Jose Salcedo.

Lake port beside the Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, it has landscapes of indescribable beauty and has been the origin and cradle of big pre-Hispanic civilizations as Tiahuanaco, Collas and Aymaras. It is also the origin of the mythical legend of Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, who were said to have emerged from its waters and have gone to Cuzco to found the capital of the Inca empire.

Lake Titicaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world, at 3,812 m (12,507 feet) above sea level. The lake has an average depth of 107m, and a maximum depth of 281m and is fed by rainfall and meltwater from glaciers on the sierras. It has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated and are exponents of living cultures: the Uros, famous and ancestral population that lives in floating artificial islands, or the indigenous communities of Taquile and Amantan, which maintain their customs and rites without changes in the course of the time, amid unique landscapes.

Today, Puno is an important agricultural and livestock region; particularly of South American camelids (llamas and alpacas) which graze on its immense plateaus and plains. It is also a growing tourist destination, most of the accommodations being located in the city of Puno and the nearby shores of Lake Titicaca.

Alpaca Ranch Mallkini is the ultimate in-depth alpaca ranch and adventure experience in Peru. With over 3,000 hectars and more than 2,000 alpacas, it is the largest private alpaca and adventure center in Peru. Established in the Puno region in 1996, it is located in the heart of the alpaca country Azangaro - province of Puno, not very distant from Juliaca's airport.

Accommodation is in a new, traditionally built farmhouse with 6 double bedrooms (2 with en-suite bathrooms), cozy lounge with fireplace, dining room, kitchen, verandah with lovely views for breakfast and lunch. A diesel generator generates energy only at night. 24-hour hot water. Activities in the farm are based on walking and horse riding to learn about the different aspects of Alpaca breeding and enjoy the unique landscape of vast grazing land and native forests. The breeding of South American camelids was a widespread practice amongst the ancient Andean populations, but was abandoned after the arrival of the Spaniards. After then, cattle and sheep were introduced for meat and wool. Mallkini is pioneering the breeding of llamas and alpacas animals and promotes the preservation of endemic flora and wildlife (no hunting allowed in the estate) as well as the reintroduction of endangered species.

As a breeding and genetics center, Mallkini is working in programs of carefully selecting and purchasing the bests alpacas found in the Peruvian Sierra, breeding techniques, nutrition, reproduction and research. The ranch is an initiative of the Michell Group, the largest alpaca textile conglomerate in Peru and its mission is to improve the fiber quality of alpacas, export alpaca worldwide, train and raise the living standards of the alpaca breeders in the Azangaro area, and to promote the eco-tourism in Puno.
